Guard My Hood Mobile Application

Guard My Hood Mobile Application

Overview

South Africa ranks third in the world for crime rates, with residential burglary being the most prevalent offense. The Guard My Hood mobile app aims to enhance safety within communities. Utilizing GPS location data, the app allows neighbors to share safety and security concerns while keeping their phone numbers and personal information private. This innovative solution empowers residents to collaborate and create a safer neighborhood environment.

The Goal

The goal was to design a mobile app that lets users quickly share and receive safety alerts about urgent concerns in their community without sharing their phone numbers and personal details.

The Challenge

Our usability study uncovered several key challenges that users faced when interacting with the Guard My Hood mobile app:

  1. Sign-up via ZIP Code: Most users expressed a strong preference for signing up to the app using their ZIP code, rather than manually entering their full address. This was seen as a quicker and more convenient onboarding experience.
  2. Adjustable Map: Some users struggled to find a way to adjust the map view on the Home screen, making it difficult to navigate their local area and view relevant safety information.
  3. Media Attachment: Users wanted the ability to attach photos, videos or other media when submitting safety alerts. This added visual context and evidence to support their concerns.

The Solution

To address the challenges identified in the usability study, we implemented the following solutions:

  1. ZIP Code-based Sign-up: We introduced a sign-up process that allowed users to register using their ZIP code, streamlining the onboarding experience and making it more user-friendly.
  2. Intuitive Map Controls: We added clear pan and zoom controls to the map on the Home screen, giving users full control over the map display and enabling them to easily navigate their local area.
  3. Media Attachment Feature: We incorporated a simple media uploader into the alert form, allowing users to attach photos, videos or other relevant files to their safety reports, enhancing the overall context and usefulness of the information provided.
